La ricerca si sofferma sul viaggio di Michele Tenore nel 1829 tra le montagne del massiccio del Velino, situato nell’omonima Riserva naturale statale e nel Parco naturale regionale Sirente Velino, nell’Appennino abruzzese. Il botanico napoletano, autore della monumentale Flora napolitana comprendente tutte le piante del Regno di Napoli allora conosciute, è stato il primo a riportare al mondo scientifico la presenza nel massiccio di specie vegetali endemiche e di grande importanza, prima fra tutte l’Adonis distorta Ten., raro endemismo ristretto ai soli Appennini centrali, strettamente protetto a livello europeo. Il primo ritrovamento della preziosa specie avvenne proprio sul gruppo montuoso marsicano e solo successivamente sulla Majella e il Gran Sasso: di qui l’importanza di dedicarvi un sentiero botanico-escursionistico. L’incrocio tra la ricostruzione storico-esplorativa e lo studio dei risultati scientifici delle osservazioni di Michele Tenore ha consentito di fornire un nuovo contributo alla letteratura storico-geografica di questa catena montuosa, che si è tradotto nell’istituzione del “Sentiero Michele Tenore dell’Adonis distorta” con lo scopo di aumentare la consapevolezza degli escursionisti e dei ricercatori sulla grande importanza geostorica e scientifica dell’itinerario seguito dal naturalista nell’estate del 1829. The research focuses on Michele Tenore’s 1829 journey to the mountains of the Velino massif in the Monte Velino State Nature Reserve and Sirente Velino Regional Nature Park in the Abruzzo Apennines. Author of the epic Flora napolitana including all known plants in the Kingdom of Naples at the time, the Neapolitan botanist was the first to report to the scientific world the presence on the massif of endemic plant species of great importance, first and foremost, Adonis distorta Ten., a rare endemism restricted to the Central Apennines and strictly protected at European level. Adonis distorta was first discovered precisely on this mountain range in Italy’s Marsica region, and only later on the Majella and Gran Sasso massifs, hence the importance of dedicating a botanical hiking trail to this precious species. A combination of historical-exploratory reconstruction and study of the scientific results of Michele Tenore’s observations made it possible to provide a new contribution to the historical-geographical literature concerning this mountain range, leading to creation of the “Michele Tenore Adonis distorta trail”, aimed at increasing hikers’ and researchers’ awareness of the great geographical, historical and scientific importance of the itinerary followed by the naturalist in the summer of 1829.
