Ortmann, Bernhard (Author)
Under the motto "Here is a love work of women on women!" In 1896, the Hildesheim Mission for the Blind sent its first missionary to Hong Kong. Commissioned to serve the "least among the Chinese people", she should do a work for blind girls there. 100 years later, at the time of the return of the British Crown Colony to the People's Republic of China, the School of Mission had become a model school and was now - under state-sakularem influence - in the regional blind and Sehbehindertenpadagogik scale. This change is not only historically interesting in its historical genesis and its consequences for mission and missionary clientele. Between charitable missionary and secular social work, between Hildesheim's construction of a "threat by the Gentiles" and the louder demand of the "Schutzlinge" for more participation and self-determination: The case study of the Hildesheim Mission for the Blind in Hong Kong refers to fundamental questions of the missionary history of the 20th century - not least in its relation to Disability History, Historical Gender Studies and Postcolonialism.
