Dr. Smith assumed the role of chief executive officer of the U of C Faculty of Medicine in July of 1992. Just before the start of his tenure there was a gathering of storm clouds. That March, the AHFMR did 1 not renew eight of the twenty-one faculty researchers who applied. Until 1991, when all nine U of C applicants were rejected, non-renewal was unusual. Financial support from the foundation was seemingly for a person’s academic life.
