The ‘Book of Nature’ as Image of the Complexity and Totality of the Divine Intellect (2020)

unapi

This article carries out a semantical and philosophical reconstruction of the meaning of the metaphor ‘book of nature’ and of its spread in Renaissance and early modern texts. In particular, the author analyzes the metaphor in the context of philosophical concepts, including the ‘world’ (kosmos, mundus) and the ideal noetic totality of ‘mind’ (intellectus, mens), in order to analyze the semantic intersections between the ‘book of nature’ metaphor and nature as ‘creation’ or mind-like ‘ordered totality’. In a broader sense, relations of the metaphor to concepts like "theatrum mundi" or "machina mundi" or, also, nature as God’s ‘temple’ are discussed. Finally, possible interrelations between the status of a book as a text and the status of the theatrum, the machine, the temple as bearers of semantic information are investigated.
