From the late medieval period and throughout modern history, the island of Cyprus has been characterized by changing political configurations, which gave it an unusual diversity of cultural, economic and religious connectivity across the centuries. The island thus offered the thirteen scholars who have contributed to Cyprus at the Crossroads a particularly fruitful opportunity to reflect on the history of spatial perceptions of the island. The volume is the first in a new series of publications on the political, historical and cultural heritage of Cyprus established by the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation, an important (and relatively new) resource for scholars of the island. Historians of cartography will be particularly interested to note the Foundation’s rich collection of manuscript and printed maps, selections of which are digitized and made available online. The volume is divided into three sections. The first, ‘Humanists at Work’, is devoted to the intellectual context of cartographical and geographical representation relating to Cyprus from the late medieval through the early modern period. The second, ‘Describing Strategies and Exploration’, takes themes of exploration, travel writing, and military and religious geographies of Cyprus from the early modern period through the eighteenth century. The final and most tightly focused section, ‘Taking Possession’, consists of three chapters investigating the perception of Cypriot geographies and identities during the nineteenth century. The chapters take a range of approaches and sources that include mapping in biblical exegesis, humanist cosmography, narratives such as travel accounts and diaries, military mapping, and archaeological descriptions. The result is a rich impression of the possibilities of the diverse methodologies available for an analysis of spatial perceptions of Cyprus.
