600 bambini jenisch furono sottratti alle famiglie d’origine, consegnati in affidamento a famiglie diverse o internati in orfanotrofi, cliniche psichiatriche o istituti penitenziari. [Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… On November 26, 1998, the writer and poet Mariella Mehr was a guest of the University of Basel on the occasion of the awarding of a doctorate honoris causa by the Philosophisch-Historische Fakultät. On that occasion, Mariella Mehr, of ethnic Yenish, a victim of the program "Kinder der Landstrasse di Pro Juventute", reconstructed that dramatic experience of her. The volume also proposes an essay by historian Emmanuel Betta which reconstructs the spread of eugenics programs in Europe during the twentieth century, and recalls how between 1926 and 1972, the Swiss federal agency "Pro Juventute" organized, managed and implemented the project "Hilfswerk für Kinder der Landstrasse" [welfare body for street children], with which it aimed to combat nomadism. 600 Yenish children were taken from their families of origin, handed over to different families or interned in orphanages, psychiatric clinics or prisons.]
