Bönker-Vallon, Angelika (Author)
Giordano Bruno's mathematical works entail numerous difficulties, especially when he deals with the concept of the minimum. The physical and ideal tendencies of mathematical reasoning seem to interfere with one another, compromising a satisfactory understanding of his works. One way to cope with these issues is to apply the so-called 'principle of charity' which concedes the greatest possible competence to the author and obligates the interpreter to reconstruct the greatest plausible coherence of the works. Thus, one finds out that Bruno's mathematical reasoning is by no means inconsistent. Rather, it is an expression of man's metaphysical capability to describe the complexity of the infinite universe with the help of mental networks and a framework of interrelated mathematical methods.
