En esta obra se observa el fenómeno de la asistencia social entre los siglos xiv y xviii a través de un escenario privilegiado: los hospitales urbanos. En ella se aborda el estudio de los intercambios culturales que tenían lugar entre la ciudad y el hospital desde una perspectiva poliédrica, en torno a ejes explicativos tales como la provisión de socorro y caridad, la preservación del orden público y de la paz social, el ejercicio y la ostentación del poder político, la dinamización de la actividad económica o las manifestaciones del sentimiento religioso.
