unapi

This essay discusses from a historical perspective two aspects of Campanella’s Neapolitan trial, namely the charges and his defense strategy, comparing the latter with an earlier and a later trial, namely those which involved Cardano and the Neapolitan atheists, respectively. Particular attention is paid to the way in which these prisoners of the Inquisition in Italy sought a strategy that combined the deployment of one’s own body (from medical certificate to the threshold of death) with rational means of defense (letters, petitions) in the defense of their own position.
