Le talassemie sono un insieme di malattie genetiche del sangue, il gruppo più diffuso al mondo di patologie causate da un singolo gene. L'Italia è uno dei paesi più colpiti da una delle forme di questa affezione: l'anemia mediterranea. Le talassemie sono tipiche dei paesi dove la malaria è o è stata presente, endemica.
