[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… Thalassemias are a set of genetic blood diseases, the most widespread group in the world of pathologies caused by a single gene. Italy is one of the countries most affected by one of the forms of this condition: Mediterranean anemia. Thalassemias are typical of countries where malaria is or has been present, endemic. Thalassemia and malaria have thus shaped the evolution of the Italian genome and the history of countries like ours. This book is one of the first systematic historical researches on thalassemia at international level and presents extraordinary reasons of interest for the history and philosophy of biomedical sciences and for bioethics. Thalassemias were the first diseases to be investigated and described with the techniques and concepts of molecular biology, the first for which the causes in human evolutionary history have been clearly explained. Lastly, prevention campaigns against thalassemias are the first examples of prevention programs for an inherited disease. Their history is extraordinarily rich in teachings on ethical and health issues related to prevention activities for genetic disorders in general.]
