This paper analyzes the thesis proposed independently by Susan Buck-Morss and by Pierre-Franklin Tavarès, according to whom the victorious revolution of the slaves in Saint-domingue against their masters would have provided Hegel with significant materials for conceiving the Herrschaft-Knechtschaft (master–slave) relationship described in the Phänomenologie des Geistes (1807). after documenting that the revolution in Saint-domingue, which later became Haiti, had a great echo not only in the french and English press, but also in the German one, and after showing that Hegel was a keen reader of the daily press, his references to the Herr-Knecht relationship have been analyzed, as well as his observations on slavery and his considerations on the black “race.” the conclusions of the above analyses is that there are no clear elements supporting the thesis stated by the two authors and, in particular, that Hegel’s considerations on the black “race” make it very unlikely that the revolution of Saint-domingue could have been a source of inspiration for the formulation of the Herr-Knecht relationship.
