This contributions maps the place mathematics had in the life and work of Johannes Hudde. In his youth he important contributions to the new geometry of the seventeenth century. As administrator of Amsterdam he made his expertise useful to urban affairs. This was first of all the ‘esprit géométrique’ of a rational, unifying approach to such problems as water management.
