On pense souvent que la grande mortalité de jeunes mathématiciens pendant la Première Guerre mondiale a eu un impact négatif sur le développement de la discipline en France. Trop jeunes pour avoir combattu, les mathématiciens qui ont fondé le célèbre collectif « Bourbaki » dans les années 1930 sont en grande partie responsables de la popularité de cette opinion. C’est en voulant tester sa pertinence historique que l’on a cherché à mieux connaître la vie, l’œuvre et la mort des normaliens mathématiciens tués pendant la guerre, ainsi que la manière dont on a construit, puis entretenu leur mémoire.En s’appuyant sur une très riche variété de sources d’archives et imprimées, ce livre brosse un tableau extrêmement vivant de la formation des jeunes mathématiciens de l’École normale supérieure avant-guerre et les premières années de leur carrière d’enseignants et de chercheurs. Il explore l’impact du conflit sur la vie mathématique, y compris celle des blessés et des détenus. Il retrace comment on a lentement substitué au souvenir d’une œuvre mathématique plus ou moins remarquable et d’une conduite exemplaire sous le feu ennemi, souvent à la tête de petites sections de mitrailleurs, une mémoire statistique qui ne finit par retenir que le nombre des morts. Il esquisse, enfin, une réflexion originale sur l’émergence d’une pensée de l’élitisme républicain en partie basée sur les mathématiques.
