Short of actually standing on sacred IA ground, the best one can usually do for a glimpse of the true cross is to "see" it through reliable and thorough documentation of the site. Though whist players and theologians may make interesting recording-team members, the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) prefers well-trained draftsmen to explicate historic industrial and engineering sites through interpretive drawings. Comprehensive HAER documentation includes drawings, large-format photographs, and written histories, each component having its own unique advantages and purpose, each preferably coordinated with the other two. Drawings, however, by helping us "see things in mid-air," have long been at the heart of historic documentation. The oldest federal preservation program, in fact, HAER' s sister agency, the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), was created in the 1930s as a New Deal program to employ out-of-work architects. Drawings are not without liabilities as interpretive tools, but good drawings are powerful lenses for the mind's eye.
