Lo sguardo e la performance. Le relazioni tra medico, paziente psichiatrico e spettatore dal cinema medicale al museo multimediale (2019)

unapi

The essay analyses two forms of representation of subjects with mental issues, belonging to two different historical periods: the medical film "La neuropatologia" (Camillo Negro-Roberto Omegna), shot in 1908, and the contemporary museum "Museo Laboratorio della Mente" (Rome). In relating two very distant epochs, the paper focuses on the decisive role technological devices played in the construction of the patient as a subject – or his/her negation as such. In "La neuropatologia," the doctor’s gaze organizes the whole representation and regulates the relationships of knowledge and power. In the museum, on the contrary, visitors are asked to identify themselves with the former patients, who gain new visibility and agency.
