The New Galen Revisited (2017)

unapi

Luis García Ballester in a series of important papers introduced the term ‘the New Galen’ to describe a series of translated texts that came into prominence in medieval universities around 1280, and which he associated with Arnald of Villanova. This paper modifies some of his formulations from a study of over thirty manuscripts. Although their content and arrangement differs widely, two blocks of material can be distinguished, one with 21 tracts, and circulating especially North of the Alps, and a smaller one, with a dozen, in Italy. Whether Italy was the original source, as has been suggested, is unclear, but certainly some modifications can be traced to Paris. Not all the texts became the object of learned commentary, and many were read and annotated only by senior students and teachers. The older Articella and Latin versions from Arabic continued to be the basis of medieval medical education, although these new versions, supplemented later by those of Niccolò da Reggio, were readily available and some prescribed by statute.
