Bartolomeo Borghi (1750-1821): geografo e cartografo dimenticato, prete illuminista e libero pensatore (2020)

unapi

Bartolomeo Borghi was a geographer and cartographer who lived between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He deserves attention for his important scientific investigations, for the roles covered and the works carried out, which make him a prominent personality in the historical and geographical landscape of his time. Among his works we must remember those on the topography of Trasimeno Lake; the beautiful "Italiae antiquae ex aevi Romani monumentis Erutae - Tabula prima geographica Etruriam, Umbriam et Picenum cum finitimis complectens," attached to his study "On the Ancient Geography of Etruria, Umbria and Piceno"; the maps of Tuscany inserted in Zatta’s "Atlante Novissimo"; two General Atlases, the first one for the Siena publisher Pazzini Carli, released between 1788 and 1801, the second one published by Aristide Parigi in Florence in 1819, with 136 maps and 35 descriptive tables. Borghi was an Enlightenment priest. He protested against the justice system and government of State of the Church. Because of his collaboration with the French during the Napoleonic period, after the Congress of Vienna he was arrested, tried and sentenced to seven years in prison, then turned into perpetual exile in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany for the diplomatic intervention of the Grand Duke Ferdinand III.
