Introduction of American Bridge Technology into New South Wales, Australia (1995)

unapi

During the latter part of the 19th century, despite a growing recognition in Australia of the superiority of American trusses for long-span bridges, there was a long delay in their adoption. Only a few were built in the period 1870 to 1890, but in 1892 an abrupt changeover occurred in New South Wales. Soon American trusses became the standard structure for spans in excess of 100 feet for both road and rail bridges. This paper takes a holistic look at the technical and nontechnical factors that led to the change to American bridge technology in New South Wales, Australia, a society strongly rooted in its British origins.
