This chapter considers the interaction processes established between science, the idea of nation, and culture, concepts considered as moving targets. The author affirms that the meanings of the terms science, nation (or national identity), and culture have fundamentally changed over time and have varied from one place to another in similar periods of time. In the medium term, national identity and nation itself have become increasingly complicated and ambivalent concepts in an increasingly globalized world. Science and erudition, as well as culture, have also changed radically since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Ash defends the idea that it is impossible to treat any of these three entities as something separate from the others.
