Prospettive della salute mentale in Italia (2017)

unapi

The deinstitutionalisation movement, which began in Italy in the 1960s under the charismatic leadership of Franco Basaglia, seeks to enact a radical transformation process that opposes the historical function of psychiatry, its structures of internment and the mechanisms of institutional power. However, this process has not led to a corresponding epistemological change. In fact, in the 1980s, a technological paradigm – based on a positivist approach, and the reduction of psychiatry to a medicine of the brain, a sort of “applied neuroscience” – became dominant. This paradigm overlooks three factors which can be defined as “extra-clinical”, given that they are not technical but relational, and refer to aspects such as ethics and values, socio-political implications and environmental contexts. The article concludes with an examination of the mental health report for Italy, and compares a series of mental health indicators of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region with those of the neighbouring Veneto Region.
