Navi e marineria dell’antichità: quello che sappiamo, quello che ignoriamo (2010)

unapi

The sources of what we know about ancient ships and seamanship can be quite neatly divided into three categories: verbal or literary sources, that is, the texts of ancient authors which speak about ships and sea voyages, either in historical or mythical tales, or in the form of similitudes and metaphors; visual sources, the images of ships of every kind, from the pictures on ‘geometrical’ Greek pottery until Roman bas-reliefs of late Antiquity; finally, the innumerable wrecks of ships and boats, which we owe to the recent advancements in underwater archaeology. Each of these sources entails limits and problems: the authors don’t usually describe just what would be important to us, as ancient readers already knew it; the pictures of ships are virtually always taken from the same point of view, and show only the side of them; what is left from the wrecks consists as a rule of just a limited portion of the hull. This paper attempts a critical estimate of what we know and what we ignore after centuries of debate.
