In mental health, treatment culture therapy is an alternative form of therapy. In the West, alternative therapies for mental health developed and gained broader acceptance in response to the overcrowding of mental hospitals in the decades after the end of the Second World War. This article focuses on Change Minds, which is a culture therapy aimed at psychiatric patients on low incomes living in deprived areas of Norfolk (UK). It is a distinct and innovative project because it promotes the active research of the history of mental health in the UK with the help of county archives. It gives participants a unique opportunity to gain expertise in the area that most concerns them. This article critically analyses some aspects of modern psychiatry and situates Change Minds in the social and political context surrounding the provision of mental health care in the UK.
