The Jena zoologist Ernst Haeckel is one of the most important, but also the most controversial natural scientists of the late 19th and early 20th century. An avid follower of Darwin, he worked on the continuation and popularization of the theory of evolution and became a symbol in the worldview struggles of the time. Haeckel's family correspondence, published for the first time in this volume, contains letters from the period from 1839 to 1854. They provide information about the liberal-Protestant milieu of his parents, as well as his early botanical collecting activities, which Haeckel already practiced as a high school student on a professional level. A special emphasis of the letters lies on the detailed communications from the three Würzburg study semesters, which not only vividly visualize Haeckel's unpopular study of medicine, but also prove that the academic teachers Albert Kölliker, Franz Leydig, August Schenk and Rudolf Virchow are particular Meaning for Haeckel's mental development.
