The clinical case of Friederick III of Prussia, suffering from throat cancer, could not avoid rousing the interest of pathologists and surgeons who, between the 19th and 20th centuries, devoted themselves to the origin and growth of cancerous cells. Among other things, this august patient's bedside provided the depressive scene for confrontation between rival theories, later to be elaborated following the abandon of the formative blastema hypothesis.
