Verne Lace (Author)
A collection of childhood reminiscences by Verne Lace, written for his grandchildren, vividly portray the perceptions of a farm boy in the 1920s and 1930s who witnessed the accelerating encroachment of mechanization on the farm. Railroads had long linked agricultural areas to distant markets and to different classes of people, but in the interwar period automobiles increasingly altered personal mobility on the farm, while tractors powered by internal-combustion engines sup planted and expanded upon the muscle-work previously done by farm workers and their animals. Verne Lace grew up on a farm near Northfield, in southeast Minnesota, during a time when these changes were taking place.
