In the modern age Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1598-1671) has often spoken of himself. The mention of Hevelius and Huygens, his collaboration with Francesco Maria Grimaldi is well known, his correspondence with Rocca, Kircher and Cassini is dense. Yet, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we see Riccioli's oblivion: in spite of discussions on the concepts of progress and scientific method, theory-ladenness and tacit knowledge, the philosophy and history of science, in multiplying of epistemological questions and in the reconnaissance of countless case studies, they have lost track of this astronomer. Riccioli corrects Kepler, is controversial with Copernicus, critic of Ptolemy, convinced supporter of the importance of empirical data and physical evidence. And the theologian of money, sometimes in contrast with his institution, an advocate of the finite universe and of the need for a first cause. This book returns to the history of science a forgotten thinker. And he gives us a passepartout to investigate the other scientific revolution: that of the perplexed, unloved and competent scientists, armed with arguments that are fitting and worthy of new consideration.
