Intermediaries of Knowledge as Promoters of Ecosystems of Innovation (2016)

unapi

Innovation is a process where an idea with a commercial aim is developed and adopted by the market. Nowadays, innovation has become the centerpiece of a socio-economic development model for cities and regions: entrepreneurs, which drive the innovation process, are the actors that make economies more competitive creating value and wealth. The emergence of sound technological innovation processes is enabled by suitable ecosystems of innovation (EoIs). In fact, innovation rarely is the result of isolated initiatives. Rather, it is a way to capture the strategic role of (technological) resources and to turn them into socio-economic value according to a specific culture, embedding knowledge and experience, grown by crosslinking high education, research and business. Amongst the different actors of the ecosystems of innovation there are the intermediaries of knowledge (IoKs). IoKs are organizational structures that promote knowledge spillovers between public and private research centers and firms, explore exploitation opportunities that may emerge from a close dialogue between technology providers, business-oriented subjects and the public administration and stimulate the entrepreneurial potential of young researchers. IoK connects the innovation stakeholders using a multilingual approach. This work is aimed at discussing some of the models adopted by IoKs to create and manage the EoIs.
