Industrial Archaeology on the Bayou Teche: Archaeological exploration of the Lutzenberger Iron Foundry, New Iberia, Louisiana (2019)

unapi

In 2012, the Southwest Louisiana Regional Archaeology Program conducted exploratory excavation at the Lutzenberger Iron Foundry in New Iberia, Louisiana, which was established in 1871. During its heyday, the Lutzenberger Iron Foundry made parts for sugar mills and steamboats, agricultural implements, and other items. The program found intact features relating to the construction of the foundry building, activity areas, and also artifacts from the foundry processes, including mis-molded parts. The pattern shop building still contains wooden pattern molds, many of which are labelled with the date and client. The Lutzenberger Iron Foundry is a surviving example of a significant industrial contributor to the region’s economy and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The current owners maintain the buildings and are practicing adaptive re-use.
