In this study, Thorsten Fögen deals primarily with Roman specialist texts from the first pre- and post-Christian century and approaches the question of author awareness and the self-portrayal of ancient authors on two levels. The first part focuses on a synoptic discussion of ancient testimonies on the characteristics of specialist texts and technical languages. In the second part follows an investigation on four specialist texts of the early imperial period: Vitruvius' "De architectura", Columellas' "De re rustica", Pliny's "Naturalis historia", and Frontinus' "De aquaeductu urbis Romae". The focus is on the forms of self-presentation of the respective authors to their readers and the rhetorical strategies they used to do so. The work is located at the interface of linguistics and literature, the history of science and cultural sociology. Thorsten Fögen analyzes antique specialized texts as evidence of sociocultural structures and thus the political-ideological implications of technical writing, which can be identified from the world view they have developed, their relationship to tradition, and the value system they represent.
