Die ersten synthetischen Farbmittel wurden bereits in der Antike hergestellt. Grünspan, Bleiweiss und Mennige produzierte man bis in die Neuzeit nach ähnlichen Methoden. Farbtechnologische Innovationen des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit fanden vor allem im Umfeld der Glasherstellung, der Verhüttungstechnik und alchemistischer Experimente statt. Letztere waren ebenso wie die einfachen Prozesse der Gewinnung von Grünspan, Mennige oder Bleiweiss gemeinfreies Wissen, das über kunsttechnologische Rezeptsammlungen und Kunstbücher verbreitet wurde, auch wenn die Produktion wohl überwiegend durch spezialisierte Handwerker erfolgte. Dagegen wurden Neuerungen des Glas-, Keramik- und Hüttengewerbes eher intern über Lehre und Migration weitergegeben.
