Joseph Cheng-Yih Chen is a Chinese American physicist and historian of science and technology with an international reputation. In this interview,he recollects his early life experiences in war-torn China during the Japanese invasion,and recalls his academic career in the United States and Europe as he evolved from a chemist to a physicist and finally to an historian of science and technology. The interview contains precious insights into understanding why a physicist was compelled to study and share with the world,the history of science in Chinese civilization.
