Umberto Dotta was an Italian pharmacist born in Bologna in 1884. He graduated in chemistry in 1910 and in pharmacy in 1913. He worked in Bonavia-Negri, a Bolognese pharmaceutical industry, where he patented a device for filling sterile injectable vials which was called “Attod.” As a pharmacist and a chemist, he succeded in discovering new industrial methods to synthesize pharmaceuticals drugs and, also, he discovered a new method to produce bitumen for road use. Umberto Dotta’s most famous invention is Plastod: a new kind of bandage. In 1915 a commercial collaboration started between Dotta and the Zabban family that lasted until 1973, when Dotta’s family started an independent production Plastod in the new industrial plant in Lippo di Calderara di Reno, a small town near Bologna. In 2015 Plastod celebrated 100 years of activity and it is still conducted by the Dotta’s family, reaching the third generation.
