En este trabajo se analiza la retórica de la obra astronómica de Andrés Bello, centrándonos especialmente en su última publicación en la materia, Cosmografía (1848). Se propone que en dicho texto el autor aporta al modelo sostenido por Humboldt y sus seguidores, la afirmación y promoción de lo local y nacional. Es decir, dentro de ese movimiento preocupado por establecer conexiones y universalizar la ciencia, Bello insiste en anclar ésta a América, mediante un lenguaje de carácter local y cercano al lector sudamericano (chileno, específicamente). El trabajo también reflexiona sobre los discursos que pudieron influir en este intelectual del siglo XIX para que desarrollara dicha retórica, considerando entre los más relevantes: el ímpetu emancipador, el ideario del progreso y su relación con la literatura romántica. In this paper we analyze the rhetoric of Andrés Bello’s astronomical work, particularly his last publication on the subject, namely, Cosmography (1948). We suggest that the author adds to the model sustained by Humboldt and his followers the validation and promotion of what is local and national. This means that, despite the generalized trend trying to establish bonds and universalize the science, Bello insists on rooting it to America through a particular use of the language, examples and other resources that are familiar to South American, especially the Chilean people. We also reflect on the ideas that might have influenced and led him to develop his rhetoric, the most relevant among them being the emancipation impetus, the willing of progress and his relationship with the romantic literature.
