Language: French

This article examines the scholarly contribution of the French Jesuit François-Xavier Dentrecolles, one of the most prolific and eclectic missionaries who worked in China during the first half of the eighteenth century, in relation to his geographical itinerary. Trained in the Jesuit province of Lyon, he worked for twenty years in the provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi after his arrival in China ; he then spent another twenty years in Beijing. His work mainly consists of translations of Chinese sources, and his itinerary did not include the Chinese court. Confronting these two facts enables us to reflect on the conditions of the production and circulation of knowledge about China in the context of the Catholic mission, as well as on the limits of this circulation.,
