Johann Wilhelm Schele ist heute weitgehend vergessen, und er war es schon im späteren 18.Jahrhundert. Immerhin hat man in den letzten Jahren seine Vornamen eruiert, seine Lebensdaten bleiben aber nach wie vor unbekannt. Dennoch kann er unser Interesse beanspruchen, machte er doch um 1700 höchst eigentümliche Vorschläge für die Visualisierung historisch-genealogischer Zusammenhänge, die jedoch kaum ein Echo hervorriefen. Bescheidene Aufmerksamkeit genießt er allenfalls im Rahmen der Leibnizforschung, denn in den Jahren zwischen 1704 und 1714 gehörte er zu den Korrespondenzpartnern Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’. In dem Briefwechsel tritt Schele als «Zellische[r] Commissariu[s]» in Erscheinung, der von Amsterdam und Den Haag aus im Wesentlichen als Bücheragent fungierte und über den Leibniz die ihm anvertrauten Bibliotheken in Hannover und Wolfenbüttel mit in den Niederlanden getätigten Erwerbungen versorgte.
