The several hundreds of cultural resource reports which have been written about historic hard rock mines in Montana comprise a very large and important data set which recognizes the breadth of variation in mine history, engineering, camp configuration, and modern condition. In the majority of cases, these documents take the form of gray literature prepared for federal or state agencies, but are rarely seen by others. Abstracting a 2003 gray-literature report, this paper brings to another audience the history and technology of one important former silver-lead smelting property in central Montana, namely, the Montana Smelter. The first large custom smelter in the state, it operated from 1889 to 1901. A product of eminent smelter designer Anton Eilers, it was state-of-the-art at its construction. Within twelve short years, however, rapidly changing smelter technology and competition with another Montana custom smelter rendered the plant obsolete.
