Fra il terremoto di Lisbona del 1755 e la pubblicazione delle Recherches sur les ossements fossiles de quadrupèdes di Georges Cuvier (1812), la rovina diviene l’oggetto-laboratorio della filosofia dei Lumi. Irriducibile e polisemica, depositato della storia della natura e di quella degli uomini, essa si colloca all’intersezione tra saperi e metodi differenti, rivelandosi un vero e proprio centro concettuale e metaforico della seconda metà del Settecento. Né presente né passata, ma passato che si deposita naturalmente nella forma del presente, la rovina restituisce l’immagine di una ragione che non occulta le ombre e gli angoli del tempo, ma che interroga le strutture chiaroscurali della storia e dei suoi ritmi: nella tensione tra permanenza e oblio, nella catastrofe che articola la misura variabile delle continuità e delle discontinuità e dell’atteso e dell’inatteso, tutta la superficie del presente appare attraversata da ritmi e storie multiple che mostrano, agli occhi del filosofo, l’enorme profondità dell’istante.
