Romagna Apennine (Northern Italy) is largely characterized, from one side, by Geological Formations with weak or plastic consistency, from the other, by a climate of transition between Mediterranean and Continental biomes, whose trends show a concentration of rainfalls in a few months only and, as a consequence, variable riverine regimes. Moreover, the small water volumes of the rivers allowed, in this region, the formation of narrow valleys superimposed to the bedrock. On the basis of these factors, the creation of landslide dams, with different dimensions and different durations, caused by gravitational processes, was not infrequent during historical time in Romagna Apennine. Using an essay by leading Italian geographer Lucio Gambi (1948) as a starting point, the paper will deal with several case-studies from this region (Sorbano, Boesimo, Quarto, Castrocaro) in a long term perspective, from the Roman Age to the 20th century, discussing the different sources (archaeological, written, iconographic, cartographical, photographic) available. The final results and the strategies of adaptation, mitigation or solution undertaken by the local communities, in the broader context of the historical juncture of each event, will be outlined.
