L'interdetto della conoscenza: segreti celesti e arcani musicali nel Cinquecento e Seicento (2009)

unapi

Man has questioned the astral and divine world by means of musical and astrological science. Perhaps overstepping the prohibition against knowledge of celestial matters, the musician and the astrologer interrogate a restricted wisdom and scrutinize natural and divine mysteries. Certain forms of enigmatic musical composition, through their semantics, their symbolism and their structure, testify to this investigation of natural and divine secrets. The mathematical structure of music also permits the musician to share the goals of judicial astrology, flirting dangerously with the prohibition against knowledge of future events, reserved for God. The systematization, by means of emblematic examples, of the methods which man has found to search for wisdom, as well as the forms of representation of this wisdom, leads to a possible construction of a theory of celestial and concealed wisdom.
