Il manoscritto riscoperto: “Materia Medica Regni Animalis” di Domenico Cirillo (2021)

unapi

The historian Arturo Caruso, an otholaryngologist, together with the zoologist Ottavio Soppelsa and Stefania Paoli who took care of the literary-linguistic part, completed the first translation into Italian of the manuscript Materia Medica Regni Animalis by the physician, entomologist, botanist Domenico Cirillo (1739-1799). The scientific path of the Neapolitan seventeenth century allowed him to write the Materia Medica Regni Vegetabilis in 1787 and the Materia Medica Regni Mineralis in 1792. The next work that concluded the lessons survived the master thanks to his pupil, Pasquale Carusi who transcribed it and thus completed the treatment of the three Kingdoms of Nature: his son Giusepppe Maria will publish the text in 1861. Pars prima reviews the knowledge of the time on nutrition and lays the foundations on the importance of nutrition from birth to adulthood: milk is widely and correctly treated as it is essential in the puerperium and useful later on. About meat, after a mention on cannibalism, it takes into consideration that of various types of other animals and the ways of preparing it, especially in broths. Pars altera deals with their usefulness in therapy and focuses particularly on the use of vesicators (cantharides); he does not shy away from remembering even the superfluous, outdated elements (mumia, elephant’s teeth, frog sperm whose thighs he prefers, etc.) as they constitute a discipline that should be thoroughly examined and illustrated because it is part of History of Medicine.
