Lameli, Alfred (Author)
The paper focuses on the «spatial turn» which has been influencing the social, cultural and media sciences over the last three decades. This spatial turn, however, is not merely an academic undertaking, but is rooted in a profound change in the real world as reflected in theories. The increased attention to space is the result of a fundamental upheaval, the cultural impact of which is only gradually revealing itself. There are many reasons for this, including the processes of urban gentrification, increasing ecological awareness, the return of geopolitical thinking after the end of the Cold War, and the changed nature of global communication as the result of digitalisation. The last point in particular is of decisive importance for a media cultural history of space, since the historical changes can be gleaned from the media transformations. The main tendency here is towards the dissolution and withdrawal of space in favour of net-like structures.
