The presence of articles on scientific subjects is a common feature in Old Regime periodicals that is preserved throughout the 18th century, until the birth of specialized scholarly journals. The Mémoires de Trévoux (1701-1767), an academic journal directed and compiled by the Jesuits of the Parisian college Louis-le-Grand, with the aim of “donner au public un état fidelle de tout ce qui paraît de curieux tous les jours dans le monde” (February 1701), is no exception. In its project of building an ‘ideal library,’ also medicine plays a crucial role. Through different types of 18th century sources, this paper aims to reconstruct the image of 18th century medicine in France provided by the Mémoires, reflecting, through some examples, on the mechanisms of selection and processing of information and therefore on the forms and modes of circulation.
