Especially after the Vesuvian eruption of 1631, interest in volcanoes became predominant, until it took on the characteristics of a real literary topos. In the eighteenth century, the new experimental attitude of natural philosophy guided an increasing number of scholars on the craters of southern Italy. This contribution focuses on the representations of volcanoes provided in the second half of the century by Lazzaro Spallanzani, Lorenzo Mascheroni and Ferdinando Galiani. While in the first two authors exactness and precision of observation are accompanied by the wonder felt in front of suggestive panoramas and the enthusiasm for the potentially destructive force of nature, Galiani combines scrupulous volcanological studies with a parodic reading aimed at distancing oneself from a thick and uncontrolled treatises.
