Tre lettere inedite di Luigi Lagrange, Angelo Calogerà e Giulio C. Fagnani nel 1754 (2020)

unapi

Three unpublished letters between mathematicians and journalists reveal some background on the onset of research by Louis Lagrange in the summer of 1754 and his decisions to publish the first fruit of his studies in a widely circulated literary journal. Protagonists of these correspondence exchanges are the eighteen year old Lagrange, the elderly mathematician from Senigallia Giulio C. Fagnani, the abbot Angelo Calogerà, editor in Venice of the "Raccolta di opuscoli scientifci e flologici," and the gesuit Francesco A. Zaccaria, editor in Modena of the "Storia letteraria d’Italia." After having indicated the reasons that led Lagrange to contact the mathematicians Fagnani and Euler, and the journalists Calogerà and Zaccaria, we underline the role that correspondences and literary journals had for the circulation of mathematical knowledge in diferent states of Italy. Finally, Lagrange’s disappointment and sense of isolation experienced in this circumstance in noting the lack of fundamental works for avant-garde mathematical research in Turin university library makes it easier to understand his subsequent choices regarding the foundation of the Società Privata Torinese in 1757 and his future career abroad in Berlin and Paris.
