My research in this article regarding the concept of 'power/strength' and three other minor quantitative/countable terms in Hellenistic and medieval astrology confirms the conclusions of my previous article on the concept of 'testimony' ('The Testimonies in Medieval Astrology: Finding Degrees of Certitude in Astrological Judgments', in Doxa, Etudes sur les formes et la construction de la croyance, ed. Pascale Hummel [Paris: Philologicum, 2010), pp. 115-33). In the ensemble of medieval manuscripts on the science of the stars, writers frequently considered the relationship between astronomy and astrology and the different status that each one held in the medieval classification of sciences. All medieval scientists considered astronomy a science, which means that it was considered evident and relying on clear proofs, whereas astrology, even for its practitioners, seemed to rely more upon experience and tradition, and its conclusions were approximate and, frequently, fallible. For this reason, astrologers devised different systems in order to establish degrees of certainty in the judgements that they could formulate about the positions or configurations of the elements in a horoscope. These systems left an imprint in the astrological terminology of Hellenistic and especially medieval texts, which I have analysed in my two articles.
