Galileo "positivista" (2010)

unapi

The "cult" of Galileo in Italy during the second half of the 19th century is something of a paradox: during the period of the cultural hegemony of positivism, the "founder" of modern science was not the object of a particularly critical or historiographical attention. His image was divided between a theoretical reduction to a mannered empiricism, an insertion into the pantheon of "Italic genius", and the idea that he was a "precursor" of monism and of the philosophy of positivism itself. The few exceptions are due to the works performed by Domenico Berti on Galileo's trials and to the epistemological studies by scientists like Giovanni Cantoni and historians of sciences such as Giovanni Vailati.
