This contribution aims to examine the Manuscript no. 4701 of the National Library in Madrid, copied in Constantinople in the third quarter of the tenth century, in order to understand the meaning of the miscellany of its texts: a "Chronographia syntomos" (ff. 1-50) updated in the reign of Leo VI and partially coinciding with the Tables attributed to the Patriarch Nicephorus, then the initial fragment of the "Synagoge" of Hippolytus (3rd c., ff. 51v-63), one of the works that started the assimilation of the biblical computus into the Christian mindset. Finally, after a brief transition between biblical history and Roman geography, the "Stadiasmos of the Sea" (ff. 63-82v), a fragmentary Mediterranean periplus which essentially dates back to the Augustan era and was incorporated by Hippolytus into his "Synagoge." Our research will conclude that the survival of these historiographical and geographical materials is due to the chronographical activity in the ninth century and to the intense recovery of historical texts promoted by Emperor Constantine VII, while the copy of the Madrid manuscript itself is more probably related to the military and historical interests of Basil Lakapenos.
