Antonio Fundarò (Author)
With David Hume, the philosophy of empiricism gained a special connotation also in relation to the theory of passions, found in the second book of his work. Indeed, the Treatise of Human Nature, which appeared in 1739–40, is articulated in three books: On the Intellect, On Passions and On Morality. The second book, On Passions, is linked to the Dissertation on Passions composed and published in 1757. In these texts, the Scottish philosopher – in the wake of Locke – uses the term “mind” to distinguish the concept of “I” from that of “person”; therefore, the “self ” consists of a “non-entity”, respecting an empirical method that concerns both philosophy and psychology. It is no coincidence that, in discussing and developing the theory of passions, Hume argues that reason sometimes ends up being the “slave of the passions.” Therefore, even for the Scottish philosopher the pleasure/sorrow dichotomy is the basis of man’s life, which sometimes deviates from the path traced by his own mind. The theory of passions does not imply a form of exaggerated irrationalism, but a peculiar form of rationalism that cannot escape the dynamics of the soul.
