Traetta, Luigi (Author)
In light of recent historiographical trends, which identify hydraulic energy as the only real alternative to human and animal energy in the early part of the 18th century, this paper examines works by Bernard Forest de Bélidor (1697-1761), with particular reference to his massive Architecture hydraulique. At a time when ‘machine theaters’ were still fashionable, Bélidor – mathematician and engineer, yet with a passion for the history of technology – launched a real ‘theater of nature’ whose fundamental element was energy hydraulics. Mills, suction pumps, paddle wheels, and continuous-flow hydraulic equipment were among the most notable examples of his designs, always geared to improving mechanical efficiency. The implicit question in his writings was often attributable to setting in motion the complex mechanisms that constitute the machines. The answer could only be found in natural energy during a period when the use of steam was not yet well-established.
